JLP to collect lightly used prom dresses for L.A.’s Prom Closet
Laura Berthold Monteros
21 February 2010

Most girls only wear it once, and it hangs in the closet until it’s outgrown. Other girls can’t afford one, so they miss the biggest dance of their high school career—the senior prom. It makes sense that two organizations that are concerned with helping young women would team up to make sure girls are able to have a beautiful dress to wear on prom night.

The Junior League of Pasadena announced that it is working with L.A.’s Prom Closet to collect lightly-used and new formals for girls in Los Angeles County. L.A.’s Prom Closet is dedicated to helping young women attend their high school prom by providing students new and used gowns for free. Local girls from Altadena and Pasadena can shop for a dress by signing up with L.A.’s Prom Closet.

New or like-new formal wear that is stylish and age appropriate can be dropped off at the Junior League of Pasadena Headquarters, 149 S. Madison Ave., Pasadena, CA, 91101 before Feb. 26. Call (626)796-0244 for information.  Dresses and other accessories can be dropped off at L.A.’s Prom Closet into March. Dresses should be washed or dry cleaned before being donated.

In addition to dresses, accessories such as hangers, clear plastic dry-cleaning bags, clothing tags, and jewelry are needed. Other supplies and donations of time and skills are welcome and are listed on the L.A.’s Prom Closet site.

The “Dress to Remember” distribution will be held on Saturday March 27. There are two sessions, Session I from 9 a.m. to12 noon and Session II from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each session includes workshops and dress selection. Pasadena girls can go to their counselors, faculty member, or prom activities director to obtain information on how to apply and receive the student referral form. No proof of financial hardship is needed, but students must be graduating high school seniors and have a valid school ID card. Selected students will notified of the location to shop for their free dress and matching jewelry, if available.

Students who have not received information from their schools and people who wish to donate formal wear, time, or other items may email laspromcloset@yahoo.com to obtain information.
